The "Flow" Collection

One week from today, on December 4th, I will be releasing my first-ever collection titled Flow. This will be my first organized, professional group of works listed for sale since becoming a part-time artist! I’ve learned so much in just the last month of putting this collection and release together, and it’s all so good.

It’s been a short but rich journey, and I’m so darn excited to share this collection with the world.

Why "Flow"?

To give some context about where this all started: I have a long-enduring habit of putting way too much pressure on myself in the studio. I have this horrible mindset of I don’t want to “waste” any art materials, so if I don’t have a perfect idea, I won’t do anything. The result? Piles and piles of unused materials and unloved ideas...meaning untapped creativity. A limited mindset of my very own thoughts and ideas not being “good enough”. An unsustainable system that desperately needed a change.

So, a little over a month ago, I resolved to just start painting.

No matter the idea, no matter the colors, no matter what ended up on the paper, I was determined to paint. I forced myself to do the hardest part everyday: showing up. And what ended up happening was more rewarding than I could have imagined.

This collection was born from the need to find my voice. To establish some consistency in my practice. I had to give myself a ton of grace, because finding your voice & style is arguably the hardest part about being an artist. “What am I trying to say?” “Do I even like what I’m making?” “What if I can’t figure out what my 'thing' is?” “Does anyone even care?” These are all things I have tirelessly struggled with for years. And to be frank, it's completely exhausting.

But over the past month of creating this collection, I’ve become increasingly motivated and excited to paint each night. Because I forced myself to show up and paint, I have gained some much-needed confidence in my identity as a painter. At the risk of sounding corny (but wanting to intentionally describe my work), I found my "flow''. Flow is a state of mind where you are completely immersed in an activity, which is where I gladly found myself on multiple occasions this November.

Want to find your flow?

As with everything in life, it’s all about the learning process! I have learned how to be content in a slow season, have discipline in my routine and rhythm, and cultivate a deeper joy for creating than I’ve ever had. Ironically, working harder was exactly the refresh I needed. It led me to a breakthrough. If you suffer from the same mindset that I did (let’s be real, still kinda do), I encourage you to lay it all down and JUST PAINT. or JUST SEW. or JUST SING. Whatever your thing is. And if you don't like it at first... you don't have to share it with anyone! Show up until you're confident and proud. It will work wonders for your mind, confidence, and creative practice.
